Barberton is situated in a beautiful basin, in the De Kaap Valley, surrounded by the majestic Mkhonjwa Mountains, some 877 m above sea level at 25:47S latitude and 31:03E longitude. This town is located in the heart of the Wild Frontier – one of the seven flagship tourism regions in Mpumalanga. The climate here is pleasant sub-tropical with ample summer rainfall and average temperatures of 32 °C in summer and 21°C in winter.

Barberton as malaria free destination lies adjacent, a mere 6km, from the newly established 18 000 hectare Barberton Mountainlands Game and Nature Reserve, 65km from the Kruger National Park, 360km from Johannesburg International Airport, 45 km from the Mountain Kingdom of Swaziland and 170km away from the warm tropical waters of the Mozambican Coast.

The Barberton Mountainlands are classified as one of the few areas in South Africa with unspoilt scenery and has had the least human intervention of anywhere in the country.

                                    

Barberton’s beginning can literally be traced back to 3 500 000 000 BC. The Barberton Mountainlands form the core of a proposed World Heritage Site, as it is central to the Achaean Greenstone Belt in which some of the oldest and best preserved rocks and first life forms on earth are found. This nature reserve is a vast open-air museum of more than 3,5 billion years of earth history, and little researched archaeological sites dating from the Stone- and Iron ages.

This is a bird watchers haven with more than 400 species being recorded here, along with 24 amphibians and reptiles.

                        

For more than a hundred years this unique area was the domain of lone prospectors and has remained unspoilt
 by large-scale cultivation. This area is one of the most beautiful wilderness areas with ever-changing mountains, pristine savannah, bushveld, indigenous ravine and mature forest, all intersected by gin clear perennial streams.  The plant species diversity is second only to the Cape Fynbos with 2 100 different species and still counting.

These Mountainland adventures highlight all of Barberton’s historical, natural, geological and scenic wonders. The visitor travels back in time from as little as 100 years to as much as 3 500 000 000 years ago. It provides a window in time to relive and revisit the early Gold Pioneer history as well as a unique encounter with the earth as it was in the very beginning.
